Flir i5, i7 and i Series Cameras
Flir i Series
Retail Price: $2000 – $8000
On the entry-level end of the Flir IR camera spectrum are the i Series, starting with the i5 and i7. These cameras retail for $2000 and $3000 respectively, and are designed for use by home inspectors, plumbers, electricians, energy auditors and other professional trade people who want to complement their existing tool set.
The i5 and i7 Cameras
The i5 and i7 the most advanced compact cameras currently available. They are lightweight and easy to use, and designed to be easily accessible to a wide-range of professionals. The i7 meets the new RESNET standards for home energy auditing and weatherization, helping to defray the cost of certification for those entering this profession.
Both cameras feature point and click automation which allows for easy visualization of the differences in the heat, or IR radiation, emitted from the surface of the object. They both will store 5000 radiometric IR images to a MicroSD card for easy download. These images can then be analyzed with the included Quickreport software.
The main difference between the two cameras is the resolution of the captured IR images. The i5 has an 80X80 pixel resolution, while the i7 has a higher, 120X120 resolution. The i5 also has a slightly longer battery life, 5 hours vs. the i7′s four.
The i40, i50 and i60
Moving up a notch in terms of functionality, these cameras are more durable, and built to take more abuse in an industrial environment. They also have higher resolution than the i5 and i7, as well as picture in picture. This means they contain a regular digital camera in addition, and will capture a standard image at the same time as the IR image, and embed one in the other, which makes a great reference for locating problem areas.
These other i series cameras also include laser pointers for accurately aiming the camera, and can be linked to moisture meters through Bluetooth, which is quite helpful for accurately locating moisture in walls. All three of these cameras have a five-hour battery life.
In general, the i series are great entry level cameras for use by home inspectors, energy auditors, electricians, plumbers or others needing a relatively inexpensive but robust camera to complement their existing tool set. While they’re probably not the best choice for those interested in exploring more diverse applications in infrared thermography, they are more than sufficient for many needs.
